Superman: Panic in the Sky is such a good Mae story for many reasons but also because of how it parallels her origin story.

Supergirl Saga: girl who failed to stop madmen from destroying Earth and remained as the only survivor. Who started the story with Lana’s identity before being forced into her true identity by the Kryptonians. Lex’s attempt to maintain his pride is what leads to his and his universe’s downfall. She leaves the story with someone to idolise and emulate, Clark, her saviour.

Panic in the Sky: Brainiac is trying to destroy Earth. Mae ends up in the story because she’s still disguised as Superman, but ends up being forced into her Supergirl form by Draaga. Draaga ends up sacrificing himself to save Earth, taking the only honorable (to him) option that wouldn’t hurt anyone else. She takes on the Supergirl identity permanently to honor him.

She leaves Supergirl Saga as the only survivor, and they leave Panic in the Sky with only one major death. She comes out of Panic in the Sky more solid in her identity than she’s been since she was Lana, unlike how her identity completely fell apart after Supergirl Saga.
